AI-generated translations

Artificial translation (AI) is not the same as machine translation, even if machine learning plays a vital role in AI translation. Unlike standard machine translation engines, which approach translations on a word-by-word basis or a sentence-basis, AI-generated translations rely on advanced machine learning to languages in such a way that the best AI translation tools can recognise the nuances of language, including complex sentence structure and tone of voice. On top of this, some AI translation tools can recognise specific colloquialisms and humour. This produces a translation that is far more accurate than what would ever be possible with a standard translation tool. With online tools like Google Translate, AI translation is based on Neural Machine Translation (NMT) and is enriched with all the contextual information that AI can decipher. At Transladiem, we offer to our clients to choose from 15 different AI translation tools (DeepL, Microsoft, Google, Reverso, Microsoft (v3), TextShuttle, Lingua Custodia, Tauyou, MCI Neural MT, Google Auto ML, Intento, Tilde, Globalese, PLATA – Vicomtech, Meta connector).

Our AI-enabled process helps businesses drastically reduce their costs and their project translation timelines in comparison to human translation project’s budgets and timelines, while maintaining quality. Our AI translation or neuro machine translation process always delivers quality as it compulsorily combines the following two steps: light-speed translation of the content by AI followed by a step of human post-editing, which is the intervention of a senior linguist on the AI-generated text in order to fine-tune the translation and work on the potential hiccups left by the AI (unnatural wording, abrupt sentence connections, potential mistranslations, text sentiment update, etc).

Translating this way is particularly suited to a variety of content types, including high-volume projects with tight deadlines. AI translation services are also particularly recommended for content that is highly prescriptive, instructional, and repetitive, with a predominance of consistency and technical language. Technical content found in instruction manuals is one of the best examples! At Transladiem we always assess our client’s requirements to suggest the most appropriate process and approach. The right form of AI will depend on the type of content, volume, speed and quality. Please note that we do not recommend AI translation on regulated content such as pharmaceutical translations or highly creative projects such as transcreation for which the regular human translation process still prevails.

One of the biggest advantages of a process of AI coupled with a human post editor over the recent trend of AI-generated translations is that our project team will always first prepare the AI tool for the translation in such a way to include and give precedence to matches found in the client translation memories, before allowing the AI to translate the rest of the content. This technique entitles our client to keep being consistent with years of translated content saved in their translation memories so the essential tone of voice, brand image and terminological preferences are preserved.

Key benefits:

Cost-efficient and quicker turnaround times

Once the AI tools have been combined with the client’s translation memories and glossaries, the content will get translated at light-speed which allows to shrink significantly the timeline and to give to the human post-editors the necessary time to fine-tune the final translation output. As there is only one step out of two performed by humans, the costs are significantly decreased.

Leveraging previous translations

Our project team will always leverage legacy content and previously translated files. By reinjecting in real-time post-edited translations into the translation projects and combining it with the most updated terminological resources, our team ensures our clients are benefitting from a cyclical learning process and improvement of the output quality as a project progresses. We will keep updating the client translation memories project after project the same way and apply them on any projects for which AI is used in order to leverage legacy projects and use AI on the new translation segments contained in the projects we handle.

Direct integration via API & connectors

Transladiem also supports a fully automated AI process via the use of API feeds and connectors so to allow our clients content to be pushed directly from a client database (CMS, DMS, PIM and more) into our translation management system. This creates a highly automated process with very minimal manual input until the human post-editing stage begins.
